How Will Wilson hearing about Joey Bart’s Giants call-up is great story

Joey Bart couldn’t contain his excitement. When he found out late Wednesday night that he had been called up to the Giants, set to make his MLB debut the next day, he had to tell someone.

When Bart knocked on fellow Giants prospect Will Wilson’s door, who he was training with at the team’s alternate site in Sacramento, Wilson was confused at first, to say the least. Confusion was soon changed to elation for his friend.

“We’re not supposed to, like, hang out outside the field, but he knocked on my door [on Wednesday night],” Wilson told MLB.com’s Maria Guardado. “I think he found out at like 11 p.m. He knocked at my door at like 12 a.m. I was like, ‘What is he doing?’ He came in and gave me a hug. He was like, ‘Dude, I’m going up.'”

Wilson said he was “pumped” for Bart, and they sat down and talked about the news for a while after the hug. Bart and Wilson spent plenty of time together at the alternate site, but their friendship goes back much further than that.

When Wilson was a sophomore at North Carolina State and Bart was a junior at Georgia Tech, the two played against each other as ACC opponents. But they also were teammates for a few weeks on the USA National Team the summer before that season. And they even were roommates in spring training this year.

“We just have a lot of common ground,” Wilson told Guardado. “He’s a phenomenal dude.”

The Giants acquired Wilson during the Winter Meetings in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels. The 2019 first-round draft pick played with the big league club in Summer Camp, and the Giants’ exhibition games against the A’s.

Bart now is a big leaguer, and Wilson is doing everything he can to soon join his friend and former college foe.
