Former Troy standout changes NFL teams in Ohio

Former Troy wide receiver Damion Willis changed Ohio NFL teams on Wednesday, when he was awarded to the Cleveland Browns after being waived by the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday.

The Browns claimed Willis even though they already had 11 wide receivers on their roster.

Willis started the first two games of his NFL career as an undrafted rookie last season, and he played in the first seven games of the 2019 campaign before making two round trips to the Cincinnati practice squad.

Willis wound up playing in 10 games as a rookie, with nine receptions for 82 yards with 200 offensive snaps and 39 special-teams plays in 2019.

Cleveland did not have to release a player to create a roster spot for Willis. The Browns received a roster exemption for Willis until he passes all the coronavirus procedures needed to enter Cleveland’s practice facility.

A transfer from East Mississippi Community College, Willis was a two-year starter at Troy. As a senior, he earned All-Sun Belt recognition as he caught 56 passes for 876 yards and 10 touchdowns.
